Finding Steady Ground in Unsteady TimesÂ
There are many ways to feel the weather of this moment.
For those of us who are paying attention - staying informed or taking action - it can start to feel like standing in a relentless wind.
Even when we want to move forward, our bodies can feel frozen not knowing how to thaw to take action or feel relief.Â
It’s hard to stay engaged with the world and not feel the weight of it.
Our bodies often respond as if we’re in immediate danger, even when we’re physically safe (hello doom-scrolling!). And most of us were never taught how to help our nervous systems find steadier ground again.
So what do we do when the landscape feels overwhelming?
we tend to our nervous systems
Using Somatic Experiencing practices and techniques we can help find safety in our own bodies - even as the storm swirls around us.Â
Somatic Experiencing® (SE) is a gentle, body-based approach to healing trauma and chronic stress. Instead of analyzing the past, it works with the nervous system and body sensations at a pace that feels safe and supportive.
Inspired by how animals naturally return to balance after stress, SE helps us reconnect with that same capacity. Through small, guided steps, the body can soften long-held patterns of tension, overwhelm, or shutdown.
It's a therapeutic modality, that can be taught in small doses to help us manage our day to day urges to flight, flee, or super commonly - to freeze.Â
let's cultivate these skills together
In this 90-minute session, we’ll explore simple, body-based ways to help move stuck energy and reconnect with a sense of movement, choice, and support as we learn how to be with what is.Â
The experience will include gentle teaching and practice-by-choice - meaning you won’t just be sitting in front of a screen (unless you want to) - and you’ll have options for how deeply you participate.
This is about tending your nervous system the way you’d tend a fire or a tired body after a long day outside - with patience, curiosity, and lots of care.
This tending session is focused on three core themes:
Coregulation
Like traveling through wild terrain with someone steady at your side. We’ll explore how connection with other people, with the natural world, with the quiet presence of trees, water, and sky can help our bodies find rhythm and ease again.
Safe EnoughÂ
Not perfect. Not fixed. Just safe enough. Think of finding shelter from a storm, a calm cove along the shoreline, or a soft patch of tundra to rest on after a big hike. We’ll practice noticing and trusting these moments of relative safety - small pockets of steadiness that allow your body to soften, even briefly.
Mama Bear Energy
For those of us who live in bear country, mama bear energy is unmistakable. It’s instinctive, grounded, and fiercely protective - not reactive, but clear, embodied strength. We’ll explore how to access this energy in healthy ways to reclaim your fight response, set boundaries, and thaw the places where your energy has been frozen.
By the end of our time together, nothing will be “fixed” but you may feel a little more warmth in your body, a little more traction under your feet, and a little more practice in trusting your own instincts and reading the messages your body is sending you.Â
this is slow work. in teaching and in practice.
Just like a workout for your body, it takes time, practice, and repetition before these concepts and practices become second nature. For those who have worked with me in this capacity before, there will likely be some review, but somatic work benefits greatly from repetition and practice - if you’re feeling the nudge to join, I hope you will.
about meÂ
Hi, I'm Sarah (she/they) MSW, SEP, CPT
I am a life-long Alaskan, somatic psychotherapist, and movement professional. In my work as a nervous system educator and therapist, I integrate Somatic Experiencing with Internal Family Systems, EMDR, and connection to nature to help people understand and work with their nervous system patterns.
You may also recognize me from my other endeavors at Mind & Mountain, which integrate fitness, nature, & the Nervous System through Mindful Interval Training workouts. I'm looking forward to working with you and sharing what I know about nervous system healing and capacity building for navigating the times we're living in.Â
